How well do you take care of your immune system?

May 11th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

There is no doubt that the better you take care of your immune system, the better it will take care of you.   You can strengthen your immune system every day by making good diet and lifestyle choices, such as:   #1. Eating plenty of fresh, whole, organic vegetables, especially fermented vegetables #2. Avoiding all processed foods, and minimising sugar, grains and starchy foods #3. Vitamin A plays a role in preventing breast cancer; your best sources are organic egg yolks, raw milk and butter, and beef and chicken liver (from organically raised, grass pastured animals) #4. Curcumin (the active agent in turmeric) is one of the most potent tumour-inhibiting foods; black cohosh, artemisinin, green tea, kelp, cruciferous vegetables and evening primrose oil also show promise in helping to prevent breast cancer #5 .Don’t forget this – Exercising regularly #6. Optimising your vitamin D level   In addition, it is wise to minimise your exposure to sources of ionizing radiation such as x-rays.   Nearly everyone has cancerous and pre-cancerous cells in their body by middle age, but not everyone develops cancer. The difference lies in the robustness of each person’s immune system.   Recent discoveries suggest that your immune [...]

Want to loose weight? Try eating honey!

May 11th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

Many people virtually stop eating food to reduce their weight. This is NEVER a good idea. If you don’t eat sufficient food (which involves calories, vitamin, minerals, fibre) your immune system will become weakened. Your weight loss program should focus on reducing the intake of calories and not “stopping” the intake of calories. Further, you should also increase your daily expense of calories by regular exercise.   As part of your program, try Honey and warm water. Normally fat remains as an un-used resource in your body adding bulk and weight. It is believed that honey mobilises this stored fat. When this fat is burnt to provide energy for your daily activities, you see a gradual decrease in your weight and obesity levels. It is suggested that you drink this honey (about one tablespoon daily), with an equal amount of warm water.   Honey and lemon juice: Honey can also help in weight loss when consumed with warm water and lemon juice. Many people drink this formula first thing in the morning to help reduce their weight.   Lemon juice in water has an excellent Alkalising affect on the body and when used in conjunction with honey is not only [...]

Detox your dwelling

May 1st, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

I’m sure we are all aware of the need to cleanse and detox our bodies, but we don’t always carry this over to our dwellings. Considering the amount of time we spend in our homes this should be of primary consideration! #1. One of the most important things to be aware of mold, what it looks like, and the hazards it presents to your health. If black mold is spotted, get rid of it right away. Homes in moist or high humidity areas are prone to mold issues. Leaky roofs, windows, plumbing, and cellars all contribute toward creating toxic mold. #2. If you have any toxic shellacs and thinners, make sure they are restricted to outdoor sheds if possible. They shouldn’t be in your home. Use your flyswatter and ditch the insect spray poisons. Those are extremely toxic and shouldn’t be in your home at all. #3. Keeping the house clean inside is obviously important. But what you use for cleaning the house can be worse than collecting dust and dirt. Commercially produced household cleaning items pollute indoor air with their toxins. Most people have probably experienced these toxic fumes and they can be an extreme irritant, but we still [...]

How to Interpret and Benefit from Your Dreams

April 26th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

While we often forget our dreams almost completely, some dreams stay with us long after we’ve woken up. If you often remember your dreams, keep a “dream diary” and you may see a pattern or frequency of a certain dream theme. What we dream at night can often give us clues about what is important to us in our waking life. Dreams help us to process our conscious thoughts and can give us new and important insights into the problems and challenges we face in the world.   Although we may have some strange and unusual dreams, there are a number of common dreams that many of us experience over and over again. Here is an insight into how you can interpret some of the most commonly reported ones.   1. Faulty or lost items: your phone won’t work, your car breaks down, or you can’t find your husband or wife etc. This dream is alerting you to areas of your life that need to repair or take extra care with right now. You may want to slow down and pay more attention to the realm of life indicated. For example, if you dream of your phone not working, notice [...]

Why do we forget our dreams?

April 14th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

Our dreams are wonderfully mysterious and intriguing. Dreaming can bring us some of the most interesting experiences in our lives.   In ancient times dreams were thought to be messages from the gods. Dream interpreters often accompanied military leaders into battles and campaigns! In addition to this, it is also known that many artists receive their creative ideas through their dreams.   But what do we actually know about dreams? That seems almost as elusive as the dreams themselves. Here is my collection of interesting dream facts!   1. Everybody dreams   Researchers are continuously trying to find out the facts behind our dreams. Dreams can be fascinating, exciting, terrifying or even just weird and illogical. But we all do it men, women, babies, animals, even those of us who claim not to. In fact, researchers have found that people often have four to seven dreams in one night, so on average you can dream anywhere from one or two hours every night. During a typical lifetime, people spend an average of six years dreaming!   2. Dreams are quickly forgotten   It is thought that as much as 90% of all dreams are quickly forgotten on waking or shortly [...]

The psychology of colour

April 3rd, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

How does colour affect you? Do you feel anxious in a yellow room? Does the colour blue make you feel calm and relaxed? Artists and interior designers have long understood how colour can dramatically affect our moods, feelings and emotions. Colour is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood and cause physiological reactions. Certain colours can raise blood pressure, increase metabolism or even cause eyestrain.   Of course, your feelings about colour can also be deeply personal and are often rooted in your own experience or culture. For example, while the colour white is used in many Western countries to represent purity and innocence, it is seen as a symbol of mourning in many Eastern countries.   So why is colour such a powerful force in our lives? What effects can it have on our bodies and minds? The field of industrial psychology has a sub-field that studies only the psychology of color. Read on to further explore the history of colour including how it is used and the effects it may have.   What Is Colour?   “Colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions” – Pablo Picasso   In 1666, Sir [...]

Aphrodisiac foods to feed your sex drive

March 28th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

Birds do it, bees do it, the problem for us apparently is that, increasingly, we don’t do it. The pressures of modern life and a now often normal state of near exhaustion mean that our sex lives are suffering. There are solutions easily at hand, however, and you don’t have to go any further than your local Supermarket to find them.   What you eat can play an important role in how sexually active you feel and serves to raise your energy – and libido – levels. Try indulging in a few aphrodisiacal foods and enjoy an exciting experiment with your partner with fruity, fiery results. Include these foods in your weekly diet and reap the rewards.   Probably the most famous of aphrodisiacs – Oysters, this is actually not a myth. Oysters pack in zinc – good for sperm production, testosterone and dopamine, a hormone that increases libido.   Forget all about viagra, watermelons are an excellent source of citrulline, this is a non-essential amino acid which your body converts to arginine, a non-essential amino acid which in turn converts to nitric oxide. And what does nitric oxide do to blood vessels? Yes, you guessed it -  relaxes the [...]

How to help your pet gently cleanse their body of toxins

March 20th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

Many of the chronic health problems in today’s dogs and cats are due in part to the toxic load they carry around with them. This ‘toxic’ load is the quantity of chemicals and other biologically foreign substances that accumulate in the body of an animal over weeks, months or even years. Of course the heavier the load, the sicker the animal will become.   Just as your liver and kidneys cleanse the toxins from your body, your pet’s liver and kidneys have to work overtime, consider the smaller size of your dog or cats organs compared to yours. You can see that, given the amount of exposure to too many foreign substances, it won’t be long before your pet’s toxic load becomes to heavy for them to manage. The organs of the body begin to wear out when too much is demanded of them for too long, when they can’t keep up with the demands for whatever reason, your pet’s body will try to remove the waste by other means – like through the skin or mucous membranes.   Chronic conditions like flaky skin, itching and irritation, ear infections, runny nose or eyes, GI disturbances (typically intermittent vomiting, diarrhoea or [...]

Men’s Fitness: How To Make The Most Of A Healthy Diet – part 2

March 16th, 2012 by zoe-vanderbilt

// Plant Resources:   Elsewhere on the market, other typical foods high in protein exist in a range of alternative sources as far as Plant and Dairy products. Whereas Lean Meats will provide your system with high percentages of pure Protein, vast options of Beans and Legumes thrive in supplying other important nutrients, primarily fibre and carbohydrates, to aid the process of food breakdown, legitimate in enabling muscle to build and repair.   As far as plant-oriented protein goes, a given fact is that not one sole plant or seed contains every necessary amino acid to give you the recommended supply day in day out. Therefore, it’s incredibly important that you aim to include a variety of the aforementioned foods into your weekly ‘snacking’ timetable, usually most suitable and effective when eaten between Breakfast and Lunch and between Dinner and Bed Time. Why at these precise times? Well, in reality, there’s nothing restricting you from refusing such complacent times to eat, however if you are to utilise the most from the energy that such foods provide your body with then it is worthy to snack at times when the system is best placed to digest and use the nutrients in [...]
